Choice Blog, Week 6
Jack Gantos, author of Hole in My Life, came for a book signing in Chelsea on Saturday October 17th, at Washington Street Education Center Auditorium. Looking around, I realized that I was one of the only kids that showed up for the event. In all honesty, I partially showed up for the extra credit, but I mostly showed up for the fact that I was eager to meet an author, especially one that I wrote an article on for the newspaper, the Sun Times. The article was in the edition published on October 14th, on page 14.
A lady part of the Chelsea library came to talk to me at the signing, and told me that it was "one of the best book reviews I have ever read."
Also, by filling out an evaluation sheet, you were automatically entered in a drawing for who got a front-of-the line pass for the signing, and a free copy of Gantos's next book, The Trouble in Me; thus, only three people were picked from the audience for this. Remarkably, I was lucky enough to be one of them. In general, students don't come to book signings because they think that books are stupid.
According to The Hechinger Report, fewer than 20 percent of 17-year-old high school students (19 percent to be exact) say that they read for fun on their own time almost every day. These numbers keep dwindling down as technology keeps coming out with new updates. The bookworm community is fading, and I fear that one day it will vanish entirely. I know that this will not happen, at least, as long as I'm around.
While I haven't gotten a chance to read either of his books yet, I plan on doing it at the soonest opportunity.
Thanks to Gantos, I have a memory to last a lifetime.
